Portland sits next to beautiful Casco Bay; Augusta, the capital, is inland on the Kennebec River; and Bangor resides next to the Penobscot River. Each of these Maine cities has a distinctive character clearly influenced by the state’s unique history, which means you’ll discover many interesting Maine photos to take.
Maine photography, however, is for those who want to give their digital cameras a real workout in the natural wonderland that is Maine. Trees cover 90% of the state, and it battles the North Atlantic along almost 3,500 miles of shoreline. Virtually every mile is so spectacular that, whether you’re an amateur or professional, you are sure to photograph some of the greatest seascapes ever for your Maine photography collection.
Maine photography can encompass so much space and so many adventures, but if you crave the extreme, then maybe, a hiking/camping trip into the Northwest Aroostook. This far north region is 2,668 square miles of the wildest environment imaginable, but you must take plenty of Maine pictures to prove that you conquered this challenge. Take just as many Maine photos of your companions as you do the scenery to capture these once-in-a-lifetime memories.
Another extreme adventure awaiting you and your digital camera is canoeing the waters of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Lakes, rivers and streams interconnect for 92 miles and the vistas they present, in harmony with the forest, are just what you want for your Maine photography. A bit farther south is the majestic grandeur of Baxter State Park, where you’ll find great Maine photo views of many of Maine’s tallest mountains, including mile-high Mount Katahdin. It’s the northern end of the Appalachian Trail, giving you another extreme adventure challenge to tackle and record for your Maine photography.
You don’t need to choose an extreme adventure to take Maine photos of that same unspoiled country. Drive any of the state’s scenic byways that provide many excellent vantage points to photograph all the beauty that is Maine.
It is possible to focus your Maine photography on more manageable adventures, however, where forestlands and the seashore environment are both easily accessible—and the accommodations and seafood are excellent. Your destination is Acadia National Park, which is a group of large and small islands that jut into the sea. For the most leisurely adventure in the park, drive the 27-mile Park Loop Road or relax during a bus tour. You’ll see all the sights and take many Maine pictures. If you want a more physical adventure, then you have 120 miles of hiking and biking trails throughout the Park. Make room in your pack or on your bike for your digital camera, however, because there are just too many panoramas of the abundant forest and raging sea that you’ll want to take for your Maine photography.
Include Maine photos of your visit or stay in Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, where most of Acadia National Forest is located. It’s a charming seaside village that preserves much of its 19th-century character. Many millionaires escaped the heat of the city by spending the summer at the magnificent mansions they built here. Some are now inns, which allows you to add some unique images of the interior decors and grand architecture of the exteriors to your Maine photography.
